51 Million BTU's / Metabolism Study / C3H8, e-, NaCl, 85 in. x 110 in., 45:00 min., single channel video projection on rock-salt surface, 1991. A work derived from images of the firing of three projects: Untitled (Earth Orchid), 1988, Oculus: Dead Sea/Oil Field, 1989, Humboldt Ship, 1989, that constitute the group known as "51 Million BTU's." The projection on the salt screen is an attempt to return the energy used in the firings back to sunlight by dissolution and refraction of the video image on the rock salt screen's surface. A more developed but un-exhibited version proposes three 3-tube video projectors to more completely dissolve the images back to sunlight.
