FOOTBALL 1937

Led by their all-conference end, Captain Oskar Giesecke, the fighting Badgers pulled out of an early season slump to wind up in second place in the Northwest Conference football race.

The season's opener, the first event to be held under the newly installed field lights, saw a 6-0 vicotry for Oregon Normal when a last minute pas was completed, spoiling for the Badgers a nearly perfect game.

The most serious drubbing of the year was suffered at Multnomah field, in a pre-season game with Portland U. The Pilots amassed 36 points, scoring almost at will, while the hapless Badgers failed to cross the enemy's goal once.

That senior football men be honred, the conference games held this year were dedicated to those men playing their last year of varisty football.

when a sixty-five yard pass from E. Eilertson to C. Eilertson was completed in the Idaho game the score was evened against the Vandals. This 7-7 tie was dedicated to Pacific's sturdy center, Tom Chapman

The Whitman Missionaries wilted when a third quarter Badger attack collected 24 points in eight minutes in that conference game, in which Giesecke tallied with a field goal and a toss to Carl Eilertsen, the honor man of the game, to make the final score 24-7,

IN a game with the soldiers of Vancouver Barracks, in which Tommy Thompson exhibited outstanding tackle work and was the man to whom the game was dedicated, the Badgers scored at will to make a final tally of 20-0.

A home port game saw Charlse Sikstrom star in a constest with the Albany Pirates as the Badgers effected a total of 20 points while holding the Pirates to a blank.

With the hotly constested game at Willamette University cam the Badgers' only conference defeat, 6-0. "Tip" Barstad, the veteran man of the hour, Len Gilman, Bill Johnson and Pacific's defense line exhibited brilliant play to oftne threaten the Willamette goal.

The Homecoming game against the College of Puget Sound aggregation proved the most thrilling event of the season as the Badgers battled under the flood lights to a 20-12 win. This gamewas dedicated to t he captain of the squad, Oscar Giesecke. Lee Pangle, freshman ace, Ivon Amend, hefty junior veteran, and Ted Wallulis at tackle all displayed brilliant play in this season wind-up game.

Chosen to lead the squad of '38, James Wiles, rough and ready lineman, will have as a nucleus for a team such veterans as Naef, Merz, Racette, Schwab, Boak, Horner, Petrasso, Britton, Ed Eilertson, Pangle and Roloff. besides entering rooks and other men up from the freshman squad this year.
