Sediment Collection

Left: map of collection area; right: Tim Collins and outgoing sediment dredge

With the help of Tim Collins, Ann Wettrich (video), and Gary Rodgers (boat captain) about 4 cubic yards/meters of ocean floor sediment for the ship element was collected on September 25, 1993. The fishing boat the "Seal" was chartered for the collection. Sediment collection area: Continental Shelf, Pacific Ocean, depth: 17-25 fathoms (100-150 ft., 30-45 m.), distan ce; 3-6 miles (5-10 km.) off the Central California coast, cross-hatched area on map above left.

Gradient, a single channel video, color, 00:06: 00, 1994, documents the gathering of the sediment. A scrolling text over the video image lists potential minerals from the erosion surfaces of the western Sierra Mountain, Sacramento Valley and Coast Ranges carried out the Golden Gate by the Sacramento River that might be found in the sediment. See "sediment essay" link below for mineral list.
