Fish Head / Evaporite Ship

Small tableau works, porcelain bisque, variable process surface treatment, circa 1973.

Left: Fish Head, 18 in. sq., sedimentary deposited surface, Robert Pfannebecker Collection, Lancaster, PA.

Right: Evaporite Ship (also known as Soda Ship), 30 in. long, evaporated soluble salt surface, provenance unknown.

Two versions of tableau works from the early 1970's, that mark an evolution from more constructed imagery to process-affected imagery, primarily influenced by geologic and geo-chemical processes such as sedimentation, precipitation and evaporation. A range of works in this scale and approach, along with a move across the country in 1974 to teach at the University of Kentucky, influenced the next body of work, the Exile Series.
